About me   [Return to Homepage]

My name is Hailang Jiang [ˈhaɪ.lɑŋ d͡ʒɑŋ][1] (Mandarin: 江 海浪 [t͡ɕʲɑ́ŋ xài.lɑ̂ŋ]). Hailang means ‘sea wave.’

I grew up in Chongqing, a city in southern China. I studied economics at Peking Univ., where I developed an interest in linguistics that eventually outweighed my interest in microeconomics and game theory. I then went to UCL and had the pleasure of studying and researching with the amazing phonologists there. The two years in England was a time for which I feel a deep sense of hiraeth.

Now I live in Cambridge, MA, and I like how the seasons and the weather change here. When I’m not doing linguistics, I enjoy photography (cityscapes, nature, and portraits), hiking, woodcarving, playing Nintendo games, watching TV series, cooking, reading, and writing.

[1] Note that *[ˈhaɪ.læŋ d͡ʒæŋ], as indicated by the spelling of ang in my name, sounds strange to me which is more like ‘Hailan Jian,’ because Mandarin speakers primarily use vowel backness as the main cue to distinguish between an [an]/[æn] and ang [ɑŋ], rather than the nasal coda.
